  3. What Is Solar Net Metering?

From lowering your monthly power bills to generating an environmentally-responsible, low maintenance, and renewable energy source, turning to solar power offers numerous advantages for your home or business. You can now add an additional energy- and money-saving benefit to the list with “net metering.” The net metering program credits the owners of solar-powered residential and commercial properties for excess, unused electricity.

Understanding Net Energy Metering (NEM)

Solar power electricity production varies, depending upon external factors. At times, it generates more electricity than your property needs. Other times, electricity production will be lower than demand. Your system can then use the excess electricity you’ve generated and sent to the grid to offset the deficit. Net Energy Metering (NEM) can facilitate this process. The term “net metering” refers to your net energy use.

The simple formula is: Energy Produced – Energy Consumed = Net Energy.

National Net Metering Laws

Net metering isn’t legally required in every state. As of November 2017, 38 states and Washington, D.C. had passed laws requiring this form of utility metering for solar powered customers. In two other states, some utility companies participated in voluntary net metering programs. Alternative solar energy compensation programs were offered in seven states and one U.S. Territory.

Even in the states that mandate solar power metering, the methods vary. Most utilities issue energy credits for the excess electricity their customers store on the grid—based on kilowatt-hours. The length of time they allow you to carry-over your credits can differ from one state to another.

Florida’s Solar Net Metering Programs

NEM is legally mandated in Florida for photovoltaic solar energy, as well as various other renewable energy systems. The Florida Public Service Commission adopted Rule 25-6.065 in 2008. Florida Power and Light issues bill credits and even pays out compensation in January for credits that go unused for the year. There are also federal and state tax grants and credits that solar consumers can qualify for.
